Triumph Unveil New 2018 Speed Triple S And RS

After several teaser videos, showcasing Fogerty vs Johnson, Triumph have officially unveiled their new Speed Triple and it comes with more power and a host of trick upgrades.

There are two versions of the 1050cc super-naked triple, the S and RS editions. Both have received engine updates boosting power from 140 to 150hp.

Of course, as with any updated top-spec bike these days, both get a fancy new TFT colour dash, but other additions include cruise control and illuminated switchgears.

The higher-spec RS edition also benefits from a keyless ignition, along with lean-angle sensitive traction control and cornering ABS.

Triumph says 105 parts were updated to produce an engine that is higher-revving, and generates peak power 7% higher in the range, at 10,500rpm. Peak torque is 86.2lbft at 7,150rpm.

The RS’s cornering-optimised traction control and ABS are delivered courtesy of a new inertial measurement unit which monitors chassis orientation.

Part of the RS package also includes Arrow sports silencers and carbon-fibre bodywork.

Some might lambaste the electronics suites, but Triumph say the new rider aids make the bike more agile. The RS edition is also 3kg lighter than before, standing at 189kg dry.

The twin-spar aluminium frame, single-sided swing-arm and radial Brembo brake set-ups are unchanged on both editions, as are the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tyres.

Both have fully-adjustable suspension but the RS benefits from highs-spec Öhlins components, while as with a number of base model high performance bikes, the S’s are from Showa.

Both versions come in black or white colour schemes with alternative detailing.

Triumph’s Chief Engineer Stuart Wood, said: “We have made major changes to the new Speed Triple engine. The result is a motor that spins up faster and revs harder for longer with a red line now 1,000 rpm higher than the previous generation. This delivers more Triumph Triple character, crisp throttle response and the unmistakeable Triple deep, rich roar to match.”
